Dear TRS,
Today, I received my university bills for the semester, the total is a -$800. Yes, that's a negative $800, meaning the school owes me $800 for this semester AFTER deducting all the school fees. Not only are my uni fees free, I actually get paid to study. Yes, I am a pure Singaporean, born and bred. I went through NS, my father went through NS and his father was a regular in the pioneer SAF. I'm not even on any scholarships.
You may be wondering, how do I do this? Well, here's a tip, if you are not very well to do, and if you bother to ask around, i.e. Mendaki, CDAC,SINDA and even your own CCs, they will give out bursaries for your education. Even the local universities will source out bursaries for you from different private companies and GLCs, all you need to do is apply. My dad is a taxi driver, and my mother is too ill to work hence, I qualified for a number of bursaries. My results are not First Class quality, god knows how hard engineering is in local university, but they are okay, about average. If you are a Malay, even better, the Mendaki Tuition Fee Subsidy gives you up to a 100% fee subsidy if your income can match.

This is a screenshot of the bill from my previous semester. This bill is much cleaner and easier to see the bursary amounts and it also shows an even higher amount re-imbursed to me.
An explanation of the breakdown:
Original fees are $17k for one semester. MOE subsidises 13k for singaporeans and the GST. This money is available to all Singaporeans, rich or poor, bond-free.
Hence, a student would be left with $3825 per semester to pay on his own after the deduction.
Then there are the misc fees.
Lastly, this is where the bursary comes in. I received a bursary of 4.9k in total for last semester. After deduction, I get to take home $1075.

The point is, why do a lot of Singaporeans want free education for everyone? The rich can afford their own education, by making tertiary education free for everyone, you are only making the rich even richer because they can save money on education. Right now, tertiary education can be free if you bother applying for these financial help. One bursary can be worth anywhere from $800 to even $5000(I've seen the 5000 ones given out by GLCs like DSO and DSTA). I know a lot of my friends who are also in just a bad financial situation as I am, but some of them just don't want to 'lose face', hence, they don't apply. I think that's ridiculous, your face is worth 30k? 30k is the total 4 years worth of fees in a local university. So, my advice to tertiary students who are not well to do, go out and find those bursaries and apply for them. The reason why there is so much money in the reserves of all the self-help groups and the GLCs is because you people are not chasing the money! The money is rightfully ours, belongs to Singaporeans and set aside for the poor, take what is rightfully yours.

Smart.....and btw, no one is asking for free education........just demanding the govt to return our CPF.

this is nothing new, passed down by the Christian Crusaders sailed into Asian countries. It is not free education.

The returns are they came for your natural recourses, tin mining and rubber plantations, and make you today 'Merrily speakth thy English only.."

Then brain washed you as talent in their education system and 'speakth thy English only' and send you to their motherland for higher education. After you return can only speakth English only and call them Lord and call yourself Western trained intellect and complain your native friends poor English (KL kia can tell you that).

Fucking use your brains lah, moron. A bursary is a one off. U can apply again next year, but no guarantee that you will get it again. This idiot sinkie uni student is so happy he got all these bursaries. But the other foreign students in his faculty are getting full ride scholarships including board and lodging, and free tuition fees. And their scholarship is good every year as long as they keep up their grades, no need to apply to all these places like he has to. Who has the superior deal? The foreign students, not him. He and u should wake up to this fact. Typical sinkie, got a little and they think they strike lottery and in the meantime, other foreign students getting it all. Its better for him to complain on Facebook that he had to fill out so many bursary applications and jump thru so many hoops to get his fees paid, versus other overseas students who get free scholarships handed out for the duration of their uni studies with just one application. Sinkies fucking useless.

It's ok to be an idiot. But when you're an idiot yet think yourself as very clever and 'cunning' and brag to the whole world about it? Well, i dont know what to say! If young sinkies are mostly like him our country is doomed.

With this kind of mindset, this future graduate is doomed. He takes his own situation and extrapolate it to assume that everyone can benefit likewise. Pretty dumb thinking, I must say.

We need to raise the baseline on the standard of living that the government should ensure that every born-in-sinkapore citizen can enjoy. There is NO reason why sinkees should not have the quality of life comparable to those enjoyed by the Nordic people.

Chen Show Mao received no bond scholarship which is better than PAP scholarship.

AStar scholarship for foreigners is much better - attend top universities from first degree to post-doc, fees paid and stipend, flight home annually and sinkapore citizenship thrown in. 6 years bond only.

Rhodes Scholarship is the best--go to Oxford.

makapaaa should take this bursary then go and learn how to cut and paste :o

Getting a bursary and a scholarship are two different things altogether. Why the uni gives scholarship so freely to foreigners is something morally wrong but that has nothing to do with the criteria of one getting bursary. If one cannot get scholarship, then go for bursary. Use your brain please and don't talk like you own the country and rule the politics here. You don't. Your attitude can use in coffeeshop but will never work in real politics.
