S'pore committed to playing its part in international security operations

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean has said Singapore is committed to playing its part in international security operations as a responsible member of the international community, even as the defence of Singapore remains the Republic's primary mission.

Speaking at the presentation of the Overseas Service Medal on Thursday, Mr Teo said in today's interconnected world, threats such as terrorism, piracy and pandemics can easily spread from one country to another. Concerted multinational co-operation is therefore vital.

Mr Teo presented the Overseas Service Medal to 39 Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel, in recognition of their contributions to the SAF's overseas missions in Afghanistan and Timor-Leste.

He said the SAF "makes sure that our servicemen are well trained for their deployment, and are well prepared to deal with any contingencies".

Among the recipients were 37 personnel who had been deployed to Afghanistan as part of Singapore's contribution to the multinational stabilisation and reconstruction efforts there.

These included 22 members of a Weapon Locating Radar team deployed in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan from January to June this year to provide early warning of rocket attacks for the personnel deployed at the base.

It also included an eight-man surgical team, consisting of three Operationally Ready National Servicemen, which was deployed to a field hospital in the same base in Tarin Kowt.

Also receiving the medals were a five-man National Command Element that was deployed to Afghanistan for the first time to provide command and control for SAF troops, as well as two other servicemen who served in the National Support Element to provide logistics and liaison support for SAF deployments in Afghanistan.

The other medal recipients included two officers deployed to Timor-Leste as part of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste from September 2009 to September 2010.
