A MediaCorp poll conducted during a TV forum organized by the Suria channel showed that nearly 8 in 10 participants felt Budget 2013 could bring about “quality growth and an inclusive society”.
However, only 20 people were invited to the forum to share their views with regard to the recently announced Budget 2013 by the Govt.
The 20 people were said to be “from all walks of life” but their background details were not known.
This was the first the first Budget Forum conducted in Malay on TV and the show was aired this evening (28 Feb) at 9:30pm.
Guest-of-honor, Communications and Information Minister and Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs Dr Yaacob Ibrahim described Budget 2013 as a brave step taken by the government to achieve “quality growth and an inclusive society”.
In the forum, Dr Yaacob also said that the government has to make some specific choices to achieve the two objectives. They include reducing the number of foreign workers and extending more help to businesses and those who are in need.
He said the economy also needs to be restructured in order to improve productivity.
The Budget also aims to have a more progressive tax structure, with the rich being taxed more.
He said that as a policy tool, this is one the Govt can use to address the income inequality issue in Singapore.
“We do not want to see the emergence of two classes in Singapore… which could affect our harmony,” he added.
