New NKF chairman pays tribute to Gerard Ee

SINGAPORE - Former Fraser & Neave (F&N) CEO Mr Koh Poh Tiong has officially taken over as chairman of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

He replaces Mr Gerard Ee, who stepped down from the post on October 29.

Mr Ee helped to iron out issues in corporate governance, accountability and transparency of the NKF, which was then plagued by a scandal involving the misuse of funds.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: "Under his leadership, NKF focused on patient care and brought down costs through prudent expenditure and has also increased patient subsidies so that more can benefit."

In addition, four new dialysis centres were established to meet the needs of more kidney failure patients.

Under Mr Ee's leadership, the NKF also*improved its overall corporate governance and accountability.

Not only did he ensure compliance with the Code of Governance for Charities and Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs), he also helped to ensure that roles and responsibilities of the board were clearly defined and delineated with the implementation of a terms of reference for sub committees.

Policies to encourage whistle blowing and clarity of the organisation's reserves and finances were also introduced to prevent corruption and dishonesty.

In the human resources division, Mr Ee enforced a clearer salary and grade structure to ensure defined processes in staff progression.

During his years as chairman, Mr Ee strengthened NKF's focus on patient care, bringing down costs, increasing patient subsidies and expanding patient capacity in dialysis centres.

One of the programmes implemented under Mr Ee was the Portable Subsidy programme, which provides subsidies to patients who need financial assistance for treatment but are unable to join the regular haemodialysis programme due to medical complications.

To further the NKF cause, Mr Ee had also set up a $10 million "Kidney Live Donor Support Fund" to provide financial assistance to live kidney donors for kidney-related medical welfare and insurance.

NKF has a total of 3,033 kidney patients and beneficiaries today, which is 68 per cent more than the 1,800 patients in 2005.

The organisation's new chairman Mr Koh said: "His efforts in fortifying corporate governance and refocusing NKF on its original mission have laid the ground work for NKF to move on and progress further."
