Thousands flock to Istana as part of National Day celebrations

SINGAPORE: Thousands of Singaporeans spent their Sunday at the Istana, where its attractions such as the manicured lawn and stately building were open to the public as part of the National Day celebrations.
It was fiesta on the Istana grounds as they came alive with families, children, and a slew of art activities.
There was also an on-the-spot art competition for children to explore this year's National Day theme - 'Majulah! The Singapore Spirit'.
For one child, President S R Nathan is clearly an inspiration. As for the others, the highlight is meeting the man himself.
President Nathan is making one of his final appearances as head of state, as his term ends on the August 31, 2011.
Despite the rain, it didn't stop the visitors from soaking in the sights and sounds.
It was actually a relief for staff of the Malay Heritage Centre, who were running a booth at the Arts and Heritage Village in the middle of fasting month.
Ms Noorashikin Zulkifi, who is the head of Curation & Programmes at the Malay Heritage Centre, said: "One of the first things we were worried about was that it would be hot. But with the rain, everything has been cool so it is not such a big deal because we're really enjoying and engaging with people."
The Open House, which lasted from 8am to 6pm, drew close to 19,000 visitors.
The next Open House is on August 30 for Hari Raya Puasa celebrations.
