Getting a job after graduating from college or university is one of the most important tasks to fulfil as it is one’s way to be financially independent and sustain themselves with a job that fits their skills.

However, many find it difficult to do so as it has become increasingly difficult to find a job that offers a salary that’s in line with the current job market as well as pay the bills.

M’sian woman says she was offered RM1.6K salary despite having a degree

A frustrated woman recently took to TikTok to rant about how she felt her skills as a graphic designer were grossly undervalued after she was offered a low salary.

In the 57-second clip, the woman, who calls herself ‘Cikgu Hanis’ on TikTok, began the clip by asking whether a RM1,600 salary was enough to survive in a city like KL.
She then went on to say that she was offered a paltry RM1,600 salary as a fresh graduate with a degree graphic design.

When I went to apply for a basic retail job with only an SPM certificate and no prior experience, I was offered a basic salary of RM3,000.

“Can you imagine that? A fresh graduate with no experience in graphic design is offered only RM1,600 while the same person without experience is offered a RM3,000 basic salary for the retail job!” she lamented.
The woman also wrote in the video caption that it was no surprise that most young people nowadays do not want to pursue a higher education.

Netizens offer advice to OP

The clip has since garnered more than 120,000 views and netizens who were sympathetic to the woman’s plight gave her some advice on how to make the most out of it.

One suggested that she take the graphic design job with the RM1,600 salary and slowly build her experience from there.

Another urged her not to be too short-sighted but to instead focus on building her portfolio and expand her knowledge in the field, adding that his basic salary back then was only RM1,200.

Meanwhile, another netizen argued that retail and graphic design jobs cannot be compared equally as the former requires one to work overtime and stand for long hours.

That's because she ended up working for a bumi company while in retail, it was probably a foreign brand.

She can earn the same washing plates and sweeping floors in 10 days if she come to Singapore.
