This was an institution that went wrong from the start when it was changed to an elected presidency. Originally designed to act as a backstop and a control for a rogue govt arising from a freak election, the institution was a device to hold out on to reserves for least 10 years.

The first hiccup was that Ong who was nominated by the PAP got only only 6 out of 10 votes while Chua Kim Yeow who was a virtual unknown and clearly reluctant got 4 out of 10 votes.

The second hiccup was the growing animosity over golf course use, the change of Presidential residence, son misusing facilities and the ruckus over accounting of assets during Ong's tenure

Third hiccup, no takers of substance after the end of Nathan's first term. Nathan had wanted to step down.

To address the above the Presidential salary and purse was raised 3 times over 5 years to make it worthwhile for someone of substance. Temasek funding was also de-linked from the reserves.

Sometime in the middle of last year 6 luminaries were approached and were asked to consider including a lady. 3 are former Civil Servants and 2 are captains of industry. One actually is now in the salary review committee but it is not Gerard Ee. No promises were made. The early approach was to give them ample time to prepare for the campaign. Tan Cheng Bock was not one of them. Cheng Bock is considered a loose cannon by old man having rubbed him on numerous occasions. Interestingly Cheng Bock just managed to qualify as the chairman of company as the paid-up capital is just above $100m.

There is also another speed bump to clear. The President's salary is also in the pot for Gerard Ee committee to review and it will apply from 21 May 2011. Nathan's last revenge as he volunteered.

Talk about spanner in the works - Tan Cheng Bock gave the PAP hell within. He refused steadfast against the NMP scheme and made it known in parliament and on many occasions thereafter. The God of Ama Keng strikes again. This guy not only has the Lim Chu Kang / Jurong West but also West Coast where he was their much loved MP. He is also loved by Civil Servants and the Medical Fraternity.

Watch this space.

Great job Scroobal. Did not know about the $100M limit but great to know that he cleared that hurdle. Does he have anymore such hurdles?? I seriously doubt if Tan is in it for the $.

Given the grievences fresh from the elections, plus there is no "fear" of voting repercussion since this is ex PAP MP probably with significant support within the party plus the unhappiness over the margin of victory the timing could not be better.

Only potential wrench in the works is if GCT runs. But even then if Tan sticks to his guns he could win leaving GCT with bad taste in mouth.

I think they really are not afraid who becomes president. I think the new president is more afraid of them. Why?

First of all president has no independent staff to work with. Remember what OTC said? Something like he was given a meager number of staff to work with and it is impossible to completely check. We all also know who feed these staffs.

Secondly living in the "palace" is like living in a prison or right in the middle of where your enemy wants you to live. Every move is watched, every word is heard and scrutinised, every visitor is recorded and checked etc etc. Its like living in a den of vipers. Also one has to watch the food he eats and I am not joking as a matter of fact to be careful with. Not only that there is a great possibility that this prisoner's access to his own medical help may be cut off and treated by selected medical practitioners who may have other intention. You don't want to see again decent man like Tan Cheng Bock start to behave erratically and grabbing a foreign delegate's wife's breasts do you?

So really this office is not so simple. When they say the presidency is to safeguard the country's reserves any president better remain or limit himself to attending temple functions. Come on look at it closely he's got no choice. Afraid be very afraid if you are Singapore's president unless you wanna be a dog then its a different story.

hi there

1. just drop this useless and wasteful thing.
2. sheep, dog or thing, it is simply no big deal!
3. little or no power, safeguard reserves, my foot.
4. some rubberstamping 4mil puppet.

They are keen to distance the Presidency from anyone associated with the PAP and therefore people like GCT/GY are not in the zone. I am also sure that these people are not keen having tasted the corridors of power. The fact that Nathan is the former Intelligence chief and appointed watchdog as Chairman of SPH was not well received by Singaporeans.

They are trying to build up the image of the Presidential Office and so far they have hit bad luck from the word go.

They might have done better leaving it as an appointed office with the current control powers as standing for elections is not in our culture and we have to thank PAP for it. Someone who is very successful in his career is not about to take an election defeat associated with his legacy.

Only potential wrench in the works is if GCT runs. But even then if Tan sticks to his guns he could win leaving GCT with bad taste in mouth.

The office has been plagued with controversy and it pretty much tainted. Someone who is a high achiever in his industry is unlikely to put his name forward unless he has been a crony of the PAP or has been currying favours.

Tan will never run against GCT.
