Teo Ser Luck
The North East CDC’s Mayor Teo Ser Luck, commented in a recent to be published (Straits Times) article that the CDC intends to : “to raise $3 million from sponsors by 2012 to help 24,000 needy residents.”
He further goes on to say that the CDC will match “dollar-for-dollar”, raising the amount to be $6 Million, should the goal of $3 million be achieved.
The report which will be published in full by (The Sunday Times 24th Oct), has also gone on to say in it’s abridged article online, that the Mayor gave the reasons of the “stretched target” as being inline with the widening income gap.
He had further gone on to say that “The income gap is inevitable, but what we can do is to get more of the well-off to help the less well-off” (The Straits Times Online).
The noble aspirations would at first, seem to raise Mayor Teo Ser Luck, placing him amongst the ranks of Samaritans like Robin Hood.
Until such time where one realizes, that the North East CDC comes under the purview of the PA (People’s Association) which in turn is a statutory board under the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS).
The MCYS had recently, hosted the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore at the cost of a staggering estimated cost of $387 Million.
While Mayor Teo Ser Luck, is banking on the rich to substantiate the amount of donations needed to hit a Target of $6 Million. The Parent Ministry of the North East CDC had just spent and un-budgeted and unparliamentary amount that was triple the allocated budget. ($387 Million)
How did the Ministry that holds the portfolio of – - Ministry of Community Development, place a sporting event above the needs of the “less-well-of” to use the Mayor’s word verbatim.
Has the Ministry somehow misplaced it’s priorities, in that the needs of the people was superseded by a sporting event.
With two of it’s five pillars listed on it’s website being, (Socially Responsible Individuals) and (Strong and Stable Families): How does relying on the rich to help the “ widening income gap” for a sum of $3 Million and overspending by three times the allocated budget to the tune of $387 Million, align itself with it’s Five Pillars.
Community Development should have been it’s first and foremost priority as opposed to positioning or marketing Singapore via a Sporting Event.
