The problem about relying on people is that they are essentially unreliable unless the job which you require them to do, appeals and calls forth the appeal to their higher, nobler and better sensibilities. In the case of the PAP, their calling to the job is one of mostly greed and vain-glory. Therefore, for most of the people who join the PAP, they join not because it is an appeal to their better sides but to appease and satiate their more primal and sadly, poorer aspects of their character. They did not have to take on apparent personal risks to reputation and career to stick their neck out for what is maybe an unappreciative and unforgiving citizenry. Most of them think that their party machinery will somehow ensure their smooth passage into the government and from there onwards, it will be a cushy ride to a path of riches, fame and fortune.
Whereas, for the people working for the opposition and WP, what lies in wait for them is the need to really prove their worth, to get in touch and work with the people on the ground, to convince an unbelieving public that they too have the mettle and substance to rise up to become good leaders of this country. The key thing for the WP will be to make sure that people of poor character and defective values must be weeded out, failure to do so will mean an undermining of all the great things achieved in the past. All it takes is a few mistakes in choosing the wrong people, and the whole faith and belief in the party will crumble very quickly. No one is so scared and important or crucial that they are regarded as indispensible, if someone proves that they are unsuitable then they must be quickly chopped off so that the tree can remain strong. In the case of the PAP, they have allowed some really poor quality people to rise in their ranks and their so called "talent-spotting" has become a form of "talent-blocking" because the existing people within their ranks, will choose only those who are not as good as them or even better, weaker individuals who they can easily manipulate and will never rise to amount to anything. The talented and charismatic will know that joining the PAP will just mean that there will be no value to one's ideas because it is just a protective bureaucracy built to surround, protect and ensure the longevity of one man and his family only. That was how even the greatest empires failed and hopefully we will see the dismantling of this one.
This whole episode of the Yawgate and Mangogate is a very important lesson to the PAP.
If you want to get on the moral highhorse, be careful you don't fall off it because it will be a long way down.
