It’s just like in Singapore when we keep talking about rewarding people according to their merit, and that working hard is all you need. Sure, that may be true, but having your parents spend thousands each month for extra lessons and tuition surely can’t hurt.

Yet how many families in Singapore can really afford that? And with teachers in school rushing through the syllabus and relying on tuition teachers to pick up the slack, are we really just punishing the children who haven’t got the means to pay for extra classes?

Textbooks aren’t cheap. It’s true even from primary school, and you can see it from the book lists children bring home to their parents at the end of the year.

It amazes me what they are trying to cram into the students minds within the 1st 6 years of primary education. Then another 4 more years of same shit which most of what they had been taught will not be applied at all.

Nothing beats lifelong learning which are very practical and useful to the individual. All a child needs is some basic skills and guide them along until they achieve their potential. No point in trying to make all of them become scientists and mathematicians.

As more and more new discoveries are made, imagine 30 years from now? Can the next generation of kids learn more than today's kids and will they have higher brain capacities? Probably 60 years ago, kids only learn 30% of what is being taught today. Yet these are the people in MOE who dictates what kids should learn today. Where did they get all the knowledge? Definitely not from school but through lifelong education.

not happy then get the fuck out of the country lah.. talk so much in the forum and yet do nothing in real life.

a bunch of pathetic coward ball-less shit.

The society is already set in its ways. With the demise of Borders, what other major bookstore is there? Only Popular - because it sells school and exam oriented books. No other country in the world sells Ten-Year Series exam reprints - only Sinkie. So that's the part books have in Singapore - texts for exams. Not for enrichment, enjoyment, nor others that encourage critical thinking.

Kids pass exams, adults make money - that's all. Nothing else matters in Peesai.

sinkies are not supposed to be enriched, enjoyed and have critical thinking,

they are being educated to be ass-screwed by their govt daily.

sinkie kids consistently score very high marks for math and science globally.

a little sacrifice is okay. we need to be number 1.

Kudos to PAP for their foresight

That's reported by the ST probably. You mean to say kids from Korea, Taiwan, HK, Japan, US, Israel, etc. are consistently outperformed by Sg kids in Math and Science? For the sacrifice, any Sg Nobel candidates for Mathematics? Physics? Chemistry?

Sorry, I just feel that kids should have a childhood, carefree, play, and socialising. They will grow up loving and compassionate.

Cheers!

PAP not one to blow its trumpets so probably not much people know

Singapore emerged among the top performers in the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) in 2009. Out of 65 countries, Singapore was ranked 2nd in mathematics, 4th in science, and 5th in reading.

The public tertiary education institutions in Singapore are the four local Autonomous Universities - the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University and the Singapore University of Technology and Design; Singapore Institute of Technology; as well as the five polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education.

There are over 1,200 private education organizations, including 30 pre-tertiary schools, offering international curricula in Singapore.

That is for marketing purposes. Does not mentioned having any nobel laureates.

Nobel prize biased la.....
I think LKY should qualify for a Nobel Peace Prize at least....

If the bright minds in Cabinet had chance to pursue their academic abilities to the fullest......we might get a handful of nobel laureates for sure.
Instead they sacrifice them to serve our country....
LHL was a good example who gave up his love of mathematics to return to singapore to serve the nation. What a great man!

Not all need to excel in studies. Mr. Bean is a good example......

Another plus, he also produced a beautiful daughter!

To date, does sinkieland attained any notable inventions as compared to those countries?

Is attaining high scores in structured exams an end itself, or means to an end? I believe it should be the latter. But again, what have we achieved with those exam scores, other than the "scores" itself:confused:
