It’s just like in Singapore when we keep talking about rewarding people according to their merit, and that working hard is all you need. Sure, that may be true, but having your parents spend thousands each month for extra lessons and tuition surely can’t hurt.
Yet how many families in Singapore can really afford that? And with teachers in school rushing through the syllabus and relying on tuition teachers to pick up the slack, are we really just punishing the children who haven’t got the means to pay for extra classes?
Textbooks aren’t cheap. It’s true even from primary school, and you can see it from the book lists children bring home to their parents at the end of the year.
