After another near miss, I think most of you recall that Qantas is the world's safest airlines as pointed out in "Rainman".

This was a workshop years back and all angmos except your truly. The subject of leadership was being discussed and the right to over rule authority etc. For some reason Qantas and Singapore Airlines came up. The guy who raised it said that SIA was the best run airlines but the concern was the inability of Singaporean and asian co-pilots to override the authority of flight captain. He cited that Australian egalitarian society does not allow authority to roughshod over dangerous matters. He said that qantas crew will steadfastly refuse an action if it is wrong. And thus their safety record.

I could see that everyone was nodding away. It says alot of being a compliant society. The issue was not Qantas or SIA but the fact that people latched on to the compliant factor.

If the 'compliant factor' is a problem in SIA, it is not just SIA, but all of Chinese Asia. People will not speak up if the Authority Figure is doing something wrong, regardless whether the Authority Figure is doing wrong intentionally or unintentionally.

In Chinese Asia, people are experts at doing the'3 Monkeys' act: see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

That is why the West is so far ahead of Asia.
