WhatsApp began urging its 1.5 billion or so users to update their apps after a weekend cyberattack. The Financial Times identified the company behind the attack as the Israel-based NSO Group, which says it develops technologies with governments to "make the world a safer place." The hack in this case allowed phones to be accessed to read their encrypted conversations and private files, and it required no action by the phones' owners. Experts say the potential for misuse is high, with NSO selling cyberweapons to countries that persecute critics, though in this particular attack, only a couple dozen phones were likely affected.
