Last year, 60% of doctors registered in Singapore belonged to foreigners. This is a worrying sign and it shows how our government falls short of trying to use meritocracy as a way of limiting our home-grown local talents from studying medicine here. Each year, less than 300 Singaporeans are admitted to our Singapore Medical School. Many Singaporeans, who aspire to be doctors, have no choice but to venture abroad paying close to $400, 000 to study medicine and many never return home in the process…eventually ironically our doctors’ short-fall is filled up by foreign doctors.
