Bravo, Hougangites, you have done it again! You are the nation’s heroes. With your hallmark Hougang spirit, you have risen to the David-Goliath challenge, and dealt PAP candidate a knock-out blow.
What exactly is the Hougang spirit, I have asked myself? After much thought, I can discern that the Hougang spirit encompasses these admirable attributes:
Dauntless courage and steel determination
In the face of an all-powerful bully, Hougangites have again and again fought a David-vs-Goliath battle – and won through sheer bravery and grit. They have tenaciously fought the same bully for two decades, undeterred by all the “you will repent” threats and punitive deprivations.
Self-less sacrifice
They have been put indefinitely at the back of an endless queue for a new market, lift and estate upgrading, despite the estate being one of the oldest and a deserving one. Despite these punitive iniquities, they continued to vote for Opposition five elections in a row.
Principled integrity
The chicken-feed sops (dressed-up-charity porridge and hearing aids) and indecent “bribes” ($100M upgrading lure in GE2006 by GCT and $100M “donation” by supposedly non-political Rotary Club “in support of Desmond Choo’s initiatives.”) – all these baits failed to corrupt or get Hougangites to bite.
The holy-than-thou PAP attacks on WP, and the despicable, infantile character assassination by PAP big guns of Png Eng Huat, the “Watergate” plots against WP – all these under-the-belt, dirty tactics didn’t go down well with Hougangites, who can distinguish between decency and unscrupulousness.
National vision (big-picture view)
If Hougangites were self-centred and selfish, they would not have voted for Opposition five elections in a row, given the untold deprivations they had to live with; given all carrots (big and small) that have been dangled at them. No, they won’t be duped to take the bite. Why? Because of their great Hougang spirit – a spirit that inspires them view issues with a national vision; to assume the role as the nation’s vanguards in the long-drawn, uphill battle for justice and democracy, not just for Hougang but for the whole nation.
Since giving LTK of WP the mandate in 1991, residents’ testimonies have attested not just to WP’s competence in municipal management. Residents have also praised LTK’s personal care and concern as a leader, his sincerity and humility in service to the Hougang community. This human face in a good leader – in contrast to the arrogance and selfishness of the PAP self-serving elites – is a key factor in Hougang’s ongoing renewal of WP’s mandate. Hougang has set a model and standard for service by leaders to the nation – service with humanity and humility.
The Hougang spirit, I believe, will keep burning bright, and Hougang will remain the torch bearer, illuminating the way in the nation’s quest for equity, justice and democracy.
