A photographer documents the final night of four female drug dealers sentenced to death in Wuhai, China.

June 26, 2003 is the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The lives of four female drug dealers jailed in a detention center in Wuhai were going to end. On the night of June 24, 2003, a photographer, with permission and consent from the relevant department and news subjects, went to the detention centre and documented their last night there.

pic2.jpg

A police officer brought in the outfit for one of the condemned prisoners to wear before the execution at her request. Dai Donggui, a drug dealer sentenced to death, took the top, and is about to try it on.

pic3.jpg

Dai Donggui folded her new outfit and put it away on her bed. The new outfit was meant to be worn during her execution.

pic4.jpg

At 9:30 p.m., Dai Donggui was about to have some green bean soup. The McDonald’s taro pie handed out by the detention center to each death row inmate was left on the stool still untouched.

pic5.jpg

A police officer fed a snack to Dai Donggui, who was executed the next day.

pic6.jpg

At 10:15 p.m., an ordinary inmate helped note down the final words of Li Juhua, another drug dealer on death row.

pic7.jpg

At 10:07 p.m., two ordinary inmates played poker game with He Xiuling and Ma Qingxiu, two drug dealers condemned to death, with two officers watching.

pic8.jpg

He Xiuling, a drug dealer to be executed at Wuhan’s number one detention center. During the entire evening, He Xiuling displayed a mixture of excitement and uneasiness on her face.

pic9.jpg

He Xiuling stayed with some ordinary inmates and officers the night before the execution. Every now and then, she showed childlike innocence a reflection of her young age.

pic12.jpg

An ordinary inmate fed dumplings to He Xiuling. He Xiuling, 25, hailed from Xiantao, Hubei province. She was sentenced to death for smuggling 7,000 grams of addictive drugs.

He Xiuling sang songs. Her voice sounded like pleadings with the heavens for a second chance so that she could undo everything.

pic14.jpg

At 5:40 a.m., a deathly silence surrounded the house of detention. An ordinary inmate brought in hot water for washing faces to the interrogation room where the death row inmates temporarily stay before execution

pic15.jpg

At 6 a.m., an ordinary inmate and an officer helped apply nail polish to Li Juhua’s toes.

pic16.jpg

At 6:07 a.m. on June 25, 2003, Ma Qingxiu (third from right) requested that her clothes be bequeathed to an ordinary inmate who needed clothes.

pic17.jpg

At 6:11 a.m., He Xiuling was trying her new outfit. Her execution drew near. She disliked the white top, as it made her look fat, she said. The head of the detention center then got a black top for her.

pic18.jpg

At 6:17 a.m., He Xiuling and Ma Qingxiu were having their last breakfast. Ma Qingxiu had some pork rice noodles. He Xiuling finished the McDonald’s taro pie she left over from the previous night.

pic20.jpg

At 6:30 a.m., He Xiuling put some gel onto her hair. The head of the detention center came specially to bring her hair gel, which made her smile.

pic21.jpg

He Xiuling was overwhelmed with emotions as her execution drew near.

pic22.jpg

The last death row inmate Ma Qingxiu walked out of the room. Ma, 49, from Baokang county of Hubei province, was sentenced to death for trafficking 2,300 grams of drugs on four occasions.

pic23.jpg

At 7:00 a.m., police officers send off the four female death row inmates leaving for the execution ground.

pic25.jpg

Police officers unlocked the chains on their feet and put on new handcuffs.

pic26.jpg

At 9:45 a.m. on the site for public trial, He Xiuling cried again. Among the two dozen of inmates to be executed that day, she was the only one that shed tears. She was also the youngest.

pic27.jpg

Death row inmates were escorted off the trial site to the execution ground. A common execution method in China is by firing squad.
