Commentary: The feeling of being home again at the election rally

Attended the Workers' Party rally last night at Bedok Stadium, my first for this election. To say that the whole place was crowded is an understatement. It was shoulder-to-shoulder standing room only. Despite the discomfort, for the first time in 5 years, I felt that I was home again. Standing all around me were my fellow Singaporeans, with our familiar accent and Singlish. For the past 5 years, with foreigners all around me everywhere I go, I felt like a stranger in my own country. Last night at Bedok Stadium, I felt that I was in Singapore again. In fact, I made a few new friends there and we exchanged name cards, promising to keep in touch thereafter. Sadly, there are only 5 days left to enjoy that 'home' feeling in these rallies. Then we are back to being a stranger in this country for the next five years.

Come to our rallies and feel like a Singaporean all over again. Every election we have the opportunity to come together to talk about national policies. This is a sad state of affairs because we shouldn't be restricted to once in five years to talk about matters that affect us.

But when we get together like this, the spirit of Singapore comes alive and the patriotism of our people shines through so brightly as these pictures vividly capture.

Why are we so afraid of our own people. We are Singaporeans and this is our home. We know how to look after our own home. What is the PAP so afraid of?
