LAST week The Daily Telegraph's reporting focused on an important issue for Australian parents and schools: how well are kids reading and writing?

First of all, a mea culpa. Yes, The Tele was right to pick me up on the use of an old statistic to illustrate standards of literacy in our high school students. The figure was out of date and should have been checked.

But that doesn't take away from the key point. Australia's overall literacy results have not been improving, and we are well behind many other countries in literacy tests.
