The 3 small boxes in Australia Immigration Entry Card

If you look at the Incoming Passenger Card, they want you to indicate the "State" of your intended address in Australia, and they give you 3 small boxes to fill up the name of the State.

Is that supposed to be a numerical code or is that a standard 3-letter short form for individual states in Australia ?
