'Thai in weapons deal'

The Sunday Nation September 1, 2013 1:00 am

Metropolitan Police Area 2 yesterday announced the arrest of a 56-year-old Thai man for alleged involvement in supplying Chinese-made weapons to Nagaland rebel groups operating on the Myanmar-India border.

The suspect, nabbed at his home in Lat Phrao in Bangkok, reportedly confessed he would be paid 5 per cent of the value of the deal, but denied any link to the rebels or terrorists.

Metropolitan Police Bureau 2 deputy commander Police Colonel Charoen Srisulak told a press conference the arrest followed a request from India after a previous arrest of an Indian accomplice.

The deal, to buy 1,000 guns and several RPG rockets, was reportedly worth over US$2 million. The Thai man faces possible extradition to India.
