Teenager admits trying to rape his 8-year-old sister

SINGAPORE: A teenager on Monday (May 29) admitted that he had tried to rape his younger sister when she was eight and he was 14.
He took lewd photos of her and told a friend about it, and the friend later flagged the matter to the teen's school.
The 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty on Monday to two charges of attempted rape and attempted sexual assault. He cannot be named to protect the victim's identity and because he was under 18 at the time of the offences.
Another two charges of attempted sexual assault and committing an indecent act by taking lewd photos of his sister will be considered in sentencing.
The court heard that the teenager lived in a flat with his older brother, his sister, their parents and a grandparent.
In June 2020, when the teenager was 14, he was alone with his eight-year-old sister in her bedroom.
The boy approached his sister and asked her to remove her clothes. He then tried to rape her but was unable to. The girl did not resist, as she was confused.
After this, the boy took lewd photos of his sister before leaving her room. He later told his sister to forget about what happened and deleted the photos.
In August 2020, the boy texted his friend and shared that he had taken lewd photos of his sister. He also shared about his obscene intentions with his friend.
The boy struck again about two years later, sometime between February and July 2022.
The siblings were home alone with their older brother when the boy entered his sister's bedroom as she slept. He attempted to sexually assault her.
The boy's mother returned home and asked them what they were doing. The boy lied, saying he was helping to check his sister's private parts as she was in pain. The boy's mother believed him and told him not to do it again.
Sometime in 2022, the boy's friend told school teachers about what the boy had told him over text.
The matter was flagged to the principal, who met with the victim's parents on Jul 27, 2022 and told them about the messages. The boy's father lodged a police report on Aug 5 that year.
The prosecution asked for a reformative training report and said they were objecting to the calling of a probation suitability report, owing to the serious nature of the offences.
They said the accused had abused his position of trust as the victim's older brother, exploiting the proximity he had with his sister.
The victim was also extremely young, with the offences committed in the sanctity of her home where she should have felt safe.
The accused was remanded and told the judge he had nothing to say. His father attended the hearing in court.
District Judge Carol Ling asked for both probation and reformative training reports, saying she acknowledged the gravity of the offences but wanted to approach sentencing in "a holistic manner".
The boy's case will be heard again in June.
The penalties for attempted rape of a minor are a jail term of between eight and 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane. The penalties for attempted sexual assault of a minor are the same.
