A teenager killed by a shark in northern NSW posted regularly about his love of the beach and surfing.

18-year-old Zac Young was attacked by a shark Campbells Beach at Coffs Harbour early on Saturday afternoon.

Police say he suffered "severe injuries" to his legs in the attack, and died despite his friend's desperate attempts to revive him.

He had written about surfing in a Facebook post on Friday, asking friends;

"Anyone have some or 1 medium large fin I can borrow? #helpaBrotherOut"

Earlier he wrote about finding a sense of purpose in life, posting;

"God is calling each of us to impact the nations and make history. My prayer is that you find out what your calling is make it your vision and Go for it!!!'

And; "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why."

Zac's death comes just a week after another man was fatally attacked by a shark at Gracetown, south of Perth.

It's the first fatal shark attack in NSW in five years.

Sharks are common in Australian waters but deadly attacks are rare, with only one of the average 15 incidents a year typically proving fatal.

Until last week there had not been a fatality since July 2012 when a surfer was attacked off the coast of Western Australia, capping an unprecedented spate of five deadly attacks by the marine predators that sparked calls in that state for a cull.
