Taxi fare cheats on the rise

Some operators cite more cases of passengers dodging payment; many cabbies don't report such incidents

By Royston Sim

CABBY Teo Bak Chwee, 61, was twice unlucky last month when he encountered two fare dodgers.

In the first incident, the Prime Taxi driver drove a woman in her 20s from Carpenter Street in Boat Quay to the Singapore Institute of Management in Clementi.

With the meter reading $18.10, she said she needed to go to an ATM to withdraw money to pay him. He waited for 20 minutes, then got out of his taxi to look for her, but she was gone.

A week later, he drove another woman in her late 20s from Boon Lay Shopping Centre to Bukit Batok Avenue 2. The fare was $7. She, too, pulled the same stunt. Said Mr Teo: 'This problem is becoming more and more serious. It's a trend.'

His view may be based on only his anecdotal experience, but figures from taxi operators hint at an uptrend.

ComfortDelGro, the largest operator here with about 15,600 taxis, said its cabbies have reported an average of 166 fare cheats a month this year, compared with 134 a month in 2008. In the first half of this year, there have already been about 1,000 cases, said ComfortDelGro spokesman Tammy Tan.

won't happen if he has NETS / credit card payment facility on the cab...yes...they have to resort to other tricks...but not the go withdraw ATM..

Or I encountered...the driver request for something valuable to be retained as collateral like handphone.

the roots of all the problem lies with the cab company...Fuck you Tammy Tan..

To be fair to cabby. If any passenger said that wait for them, want to get the money from ATM/friend/family.......
Cabby just politely ask for some belonging. Eg. driving liciense, IC, mobile phone......if they reluctant then something must be wrong. Start to take photo of the pssenger in case passenger just run away.

chin chai lah...pple who resort to cheating a taxi driver must have his/her reasons. but i cannot stand it when indians do that, especially near or during chinese new year season, they think we damn rich.

CashCard swop: Immigration officer jailed
Sergeant returned to motorists cards that had no stored value
By Khushwant Singh

Investigations turned up 130 CashCards in Anthony's locker and home.

AN IMMIGRATION sergeant at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday admitted swopping the CashCards of motorists leaving Singapore with cards that had no money stored in them.

It was how Edmund Jeghan Anthony, 31, came by $2,226 for personal and family expenses within a two-month period.

He pleaded guilty to criminal breach of trust and dishonestly encashing the money stored in 130 CashCards for his own use, and was jailed for nine months.

A district court heard that in Anthony's job manning an immigration booth at the checkpoint in March and April last year, he would process passports and check that the toll of $4.80 was paid by each motorist, who had to pass his CashCard through the reader.

On April 4 last year, Mr Vincent Ma Yekai, 29, drove up to Anthony's booth at 7.45pm. The reader at the booth was faulty, so Anthony took the CashCard to the next booth for the toll to be deducted.

Here was where the swop took place. After finding out that Mr Ma's card had $90 in it, Anthony kept it and returned to Mr Ma another card with a similar design but with zero value.

It's a problem that Spore Inc has created. I don't know who Tammy Tan is but she is just a cog in the system.

Cannot Chin Chai. You also have family to feed.
If more case like this then it will spread like a virus and become normal. More people think they can get away with it , therefor more passenger will do it.

In other words " law & order" is breaking down in Spore:(

It used to be that no one dared to litter. Now murder, suicides, gambling, loan sharking, molestation, fare cheats .... is getting common in Spore.
