Over 1,000 new grassroots leaders join PA each year

SINGAPORE: The People's Association has been attracting an average of 1,100 new grassroots leaders each year since 2007.
Its deputy chairman, Lim Boon Heng, said that this is almost double the average number of new grassroots leaders who joined each year between 2003 and 2006.
Mr Lim attributed the increase to the contribution of individuals known as Community LEAD Champions in attracting new blood and retaining existing talents.
In line with this, the PA on Saturday recognised three constituencies which have each achieved more than 12 per cent net increase in the number of grassroots leaders last year.
Taman Jurong, Woodlands and Admiralty each received a merit award for their achievement in attracting such leaders.
Citing an example, Mr Lim highlighted the team from Admiralty increased the number of members from its Indian Activity Executive Committee by nearly 90 per cent to 28.
Besides these, the PA also commended all 84 local constituencies. They received certificates and plaques at Saturday's annual Community LEAD Champions Awards ceremony.
