Tax evasion charges dropped

FOUR beauty treatment salons and the group's former director were cleared on Wednesday of a total of 14 tax evasion charges. Modern Beauty Salon Co, Modern Beauty Salon (South Bridge) and Modern Fitness (T.P.) Co had each faced two charges while Modern Elite Salon Co had one charge of keeping falsified records. Ms Joyce Tsang Yue, 48, the founder who stepped down from the group in Sept 2007, was originally accused of seven counts of helping the companies evade tax between Dec 1998 and Sept 2001. All were given a discharge amounting to an acquittal after Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore prosecutor Patrick Nai applied to withdraw the charges. He said they had settled the matter, and the charges against the various entities had been satisfactorily settled out of court. He added that the cases had been compounded.
