The Taliban have burned 892 musical instruments and images of living beings in the eastern province of Khost, citing violations of Islamic principles, according to a statement.
In a statement, the Taliban governor’s office in Khost said the instruments were collected by enforcers from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice during what it described as “monitoring and reform” activities.
The items were later destroyed by fire at a designated site, the statement said.
The statement said the move was aimed at “strengthening Islamic values” and preventing what they described as moral corruption, adding that similar actions would continue.
This comes as the Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on cultural activities, including music, since returning to power in 2021.
Following the ban, many musicians have left the country, while those who remain have stopped working.
