Taiwan reports first case of superbug
05:55 AM Jan 15, 2011
Taiwan's disease control centre has reported the island's first superbug case - a new gene that makes bacteria resistant to most antibiotics.

The centre said on Friday a 56-year-old Taiwanese man was found to be infected with the gene, known as NDM-1, shortly after he received a kidney transplant at a hospital in Jiangxi province in eastern China.

The gene appears to be circulating in 16 countries after first being reported in India. It alters bacteria, making them resistant to nearly all known antibiotics. AP
