TAIPEI, TAIWAN - Thousands of young men and women showed up in groups at China Airlines (CAL) headquarters near Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Thursday for interviews in the airline's recruitment process for 92 flight attendant positions.

The Taiwanese carrier said that in its first major recruitment for flight attendants since 2007, more than 8,000 people applied online and 5,000 were selected for the first phase interview process that will last four days.

As an international airline, CAL is looking for people with global views, English skills, and an enthusiasm for providing service, said CAL spokesman Bruce Chen.

A college degree is a basic requirement, he said, adding that many people with graduate degrees have applied.

In the first phase of the interview process, 500 candidates will be selected based on their English skills and personal qualities, and in the second stage from June 4-6 the new crew members will be picked, Chen said.

Addressing an earlier controversy over height requirements, Chen said CAL adheres to the training manual issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization, which requires that cabin crew members be able to reach the cabin overhead bins, which are 200 centimeters high, barefoot.

The list of people hired for the flight attendant jobs will be announced in mid-June and training will begin in July, CAL said.
