TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) launched guava exports to Europe by selling the fruit in Amsterdam on Friday.
Some of the customers were Taiwanese who drove several hours from the southern Netherlands to enjoy the taste of home, per CNA. The EU Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety decided in June to open up the market to mangos and guavas from Taiwan.
Huang has been on a tour of European countries to promote food from Tainan. In Amsterdam he attended the first-ever sale of Taiwanese guavas in Europe, offering samples of the fruit to supermarket shoppers.
Europeans will be able to taste Taiwanese pineapples in spring, mangos in summer, and guavas in winter. The next target is to export pomelos in autumn, Huang said.
Taiwan’s envoy to the Netherlands Tien Chung-kwang (田中光) said the arrival of the guavas symbolized the extension of Taiwan’s exports across a wide range of products, from semiconductors to agricultural produce.
