A Chinese subway snatch thief was caught when he returned to retrieve his mobile phone that he had dropped while running off with a passenger’s iPhone 6 Plus.
The thief had snatched the passenger’s phone and bolted out of the train in Nanjing’s Zhonglingjie station as the train doors were about to close, news portal Longhoo.net reported.
But he was chased by his victim and several other train passengers who witnessed the deed.
He managed to evade his pursuers at first, but was recognised by another passenger while hiding and was caught with the help of a security guard nearby.
He begged the two men to let him off in return for the stolen iPhone, but when they refused, he managed to break free from them and ran off again.
He boarded a cab and quickly fled the scene, but then realised that his own phone had been left behind during his getaway.
About 20 minutes later, believing that he was safe again, he returned to the station to retrieve his phone.
But security had been tightened after the victim reported the case, and he was recognised and apprehended by police who were on the lookout for him.
The thief told police he was in a bad mood and that when he saw the passenger watching television drama serials on the phone, he felt envious and wanted it for himself.
