23 Jan 2014:

SINGAPORE: Malaysia's Minister of Foreign Affairs has identified the Malaysian woman who crashed through the security barrier at Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

She is 28-year-old Nurul Ruhana Ishak from Pendang, Kampung Bahru in Kedah.

According to a statement from the Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister, officers from the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore had taken immediate action in establishing contact with Nurul Ruhana.

This was to provide the necessary consular assistance to ensure her rights and well-being are protected.

The Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister has requested the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore to continue to monitor the situation.

On Monday, Nurul Ruhana had entered Singapore illegally via Woodlands Checkpoint.

She drove the Malaysia-registered vehicle through Woodlands Checkpoint without stopping, before heading to MFA's premises along Sherwood Road.

MFA said the vehicle entered its front gate without proper authorisation by tailgating another vehicle.

The vehicle was eventually stopped by MFA security officers.

SINGAPORE: The Malaysian woman who drove through the Malaysian and Singapore checkpoints and later crashed through a security barrier at the island republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs here has yet to utter a word about the incident.

Officials from the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore are trying to arrange for the parents of the 28-year-old woman to come from Kedah to speak to their daughter to find out what her problem was.

Deputy Malaysian High Commissioner Kamsiah Kamaruddin said the officials had tried their best to speak to the woman, but to no avail. “We also tried to get her to speak to her parents via phone, but she did not respond to that either.

“She just clams up and refuses to speak to anyone. So, we thought that she will speak up if she meets her parents,” she said when contacted.

Kamsiah said the Singapore authorities were trying to find out how she managed to bypass both checkpoints on Jan 17 and why she did it. “She is now being monitored at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital,” she said.

The woman, who is a divorcee and a teacher in Cheras, caused alarm in Singapore after she drove through the checkpoints in Johor Baru and Woodlands at around 1.50pm.

She managed to evade the authorities for three days and was arrested when she rammed her car into the security barrier at the ministry on Monday.

Kamsiah said the immigration authorities from the two countries were working to determine how the woman managed to get away with what she did without a passport or identification documents. “The authorities did not find any documents when they arrested her, and we only managed to get her details after conducting an image search via the National Registration Department,” she said.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that security at both the checkpoints had been tightened following the incident, resulting in an increase in traffic congestion at the border.

Johor Immigration Department director Rohaizi Bahari said he and his officers were carrying out a probe on the matter and declined to comment further.

Opening of new Woodlands Checkpoint
The New Woodlands Checkpoint was opened to traffic on 18 Jul 1999 at the stroke of midnight. Built at a cost of more than $400 million and spanning a site equivalent to about 31 football fields, the new Checkpoint will cater to the growing human and vehicular traffic coming in and going out of Singapore through the Causeway while helping the authorities achieve better border security.
