ONE is a lonely number, and it is the reason motorists in Punggol are being driven mad.

The new town has just one petrol station and long, snaking queues are common, especially during the weekends.

The Singapore Petroleum Centre (SPC) station at the junction of Punggol Central Road and Edgefield Plains caters to 82,000 residents.

Neighbouring new town Sengkang has three petrol stations.

Staff at the Punggol petrol station told The Sunday Times that on busy days, as many as 10 cars line the road leading up to it, despite there being no huge discounts.

Said bank manager Serena Lee: 'I avoid going there on weekends and Monday mornings. I go at night, or during non-peak hours.'

One possible explanation is that many of the cars are for show only-like the weekend cars syndrome.
Cars are seen as a status symbol and many who cannot afford still tighten their stomach to buy cars-only to leave them lying idle at the carparks throughout the week.
Come weekends/public holidays, these car owners can be seen washing/shampooing their cars with tender loving care before driving the family to the nearest hawker centre for the weekend family meal.Notice how all the HDB hawker centres are packed on weekends with cars -many of these car owners could have easily walked but they must bring out the car for the weekend warmup (like bringing the dog for a walk).

With property prices so high, the number of cars lying idle in carparks will certainly go up as owners have to scrimp and save every cents to hang on to their status symbol.Sales of instant noodles will shoot up as many young families may not even afford that once a week meal at the HDB cze-char stall.

If they belong to the 66%- I say they asked for it .

When there's a promotion on petrol, you will see super long Q, including some driving flashy cars. Like you say, they are the 66% suckers. A Taxi driver who got pissed at the jam say "No money don't drive" in Hokkian. How true!
