Gender-confused teen robs taxi driver
Shin Min Daily News - 23 hrs 41 mins ago
A teen girl has been convicted of robbing a taxi driver.
The short and plump girl is believed to have committed the crime after she was criticised by her girlfriend for being too poor.
The incident happened at about 10pm on 4 June this year.
Yang Yu Chang (19, unemployed) had boarded the taxi driven by Mdm Zhang Hong Lan (age 55) at Edgefield plains in Punggol.
Yang had supposedly chosen a taxi driven by a woman as she believed Mdm Zhang will make an easier victim.
When the taxi stopped at a red light at Rivervale Drive, Yang whipped out a swiss army knife and attempted to rob Mdm Zhang.
The shocked Mdm Zhang immediately jumped out of her taxi and fled on foot.
Meanwhile, her cries for help were heard by three youths who came over to help her.
The three called the police as they blocked the taxi's doors to prevent Yang from escaping.
Yang was eventually arrested thanks to their efforts.
She also committed another offence earlier on 30 May when she shoplifted a pack of durians worth $12 at a supermarket in the Nex mall at Serangoon.
Yang is currently undergoing treatment at the Institute of Mental Health for an obsessive-compulsive disorder and gender identity disorder.
The girl has apparently been wanting to change her sex but her mother objects to it. This has supposedly contributed to her confusion about her gender.
Yang has since been sentenced to 18 months of probationary supervision.
Her mother must also pay $5,000 as deposit to ensure Yang's good behaviour.
