KUCHING: A strange light, resembling a meteor or shooting star was once again seen in the skies over Bintulu last night, sparking alarm among residents.

The fast-moving light was reportedly first spotted in the Samalaju industrial area, known for natural gas processing, at about 9pm.

A check on Facebook found many users claiming to have seen the light, which was followed by a relatively loud explosion.

Footage of the light went viral on the Facebook page of Francis Ngu Hown Hua, who claimed the recording was from the Samalaju area.

Another recording later emerged from Facebook user Jacelyn Phe Sing Ling, who claimed to have seen the same light in Miri.

Facebook user Uchu Ngalang claimed a friend had reported hearing a loud, thunder-like sound near the Bakun hydroelectric dam.

Another user, Calvin Kelly Jackry, also claimed to have seen the light in Song while travelling to Kapit last night.

The city's residents were previously startled by a similar strange light on Aug 25, which some linked to aliens.

That earlier phenomenon, which occurred at about 8.30pm, was reportedly visible in several areas including Tanjung Kidurong, Kampung Jepak and Bintulu town centre, attracting residents who filmed it with their mobile phones.

At the time, astronomy enthusiast Dr Zurwina Sharkawi offered a scientific explanation, saying the three-columned light was a natural optical phenomenon known as "light pillars".
