A coroner's inquiry into a full-time NSman suicide found serious lapses in managing his schizophrenia.

State Coroner said the medical centre of Khatib Camp was supposed to maintain a psychiatric register of all its soldiers. But after the death of Pte Ganesh Pillay, such a register is still not maintained.

The coroner highlighted how such lapses in handling mentally ill NSFs may be more widespread than thought.

According to an Army Directive, camps are supposed to keep a medical register of NSFs with psychiatric illnesses.

But Khatib Camp, where the private was posted, did not. The medical officer in the camp Dr Mogilan Mohan, had claimed that his seniors and the psychiatrist in the SAF told him there was no instruction to maintain the register.

The coroner said on Tuesday that he had asked the counsel for the Ministry of Defence, Ms Asanthi, whether the directive had been adhered to since then. Her answer was "No."

Mental illness has no physical symptoms and can be easily faked. If nut cases are given an easier path through their NS obligations, more and more sinkies will start behaving like loonies in order to be treated more leniently during their 2 year stint.

The solution to this problem is simple. Anyone claiming to be mentally ill should be placed in solitary confinement in a padded cell for 2 years.

This will put a stop to all this nonsense in no time at all.

i had a bmt mate who used psychiatric reasons to be downgraded, all acting and even the mother went to camp to see the OC. from then on, he has been on light duty and posted to some book out unit carrying balloons. :D
