TWO debtors turned runners who took on jobs of harassing debtors on behalf of three unlicensed moneylenders were given stiff jail sentences by a district court on Friday. Koh Thye Jin, 29, was sentenced to a total of seven years' jail and 17 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to 26 of 78 charges. His accomplice, Thiam Chin Loong, 27, who has a previous conviction of harassment, was given six years and 14 strokes on 15 charges. Another 37 charges were taken into consideration against him. Of the 69 harassment charges against Koh, 50 were committed with the help of Thiam. Thiam was also involved in one mischief by fire when he acted as a lookout for Koh who splashed thinner on the front door of a flat occupant's flat in Punggol Field and set it on fire with a lighter on June 11. In the other fires between April and May at various HDB blocks, Koh acted alone on the instruction of a loanshark named Alex by torching shoe racks, doors, a bicycle and a cupboard, causing a total damage of $1,570.
