Only ‘drkprince’ touched on the reality of the problem in Singapore. The article was good and touches on the issues but failed to highlight the real problem; which is that Singapore has nothing to trade, no commodities, no film or music industry, no creativity, no Apple or Samsung, nothing, ‘nada’. Its creation and wealth was built on cheap well educated population for manufacturing quality goods. It needs more immigration to continue to achieve this, stop it and Singapore will fail. Singaporeans need to smell the coffee and get their heads out of the sand. What Lee achieved was amazing but his failure was cradling and restricting the population to the extent that you cannot think for themselves, be creative and start creating products that revives your economy. You may laugh and treat the statement ‘fine Singapore city’ but this is actually your problem. The population you have created in the last 40 years is to work under the strings of your government, for this they give you a good and safe place to live, better than any country around you. Unfortunately there are not enough of you now to keep the bubble going, hence the need for more foreign labour. It’s not to replace Singaporeans but to provide cheap labour and bring innovation into Singapore.
Singaporeans are not xenophobic ‘per say’ but it’s a typical reaction by the legitimate population when times are beginning to get harder. I have worked in many countries and it’s always the same message, blame the foreigners for their internal problems. They are an easy target which sometimes the government encourages to reflect the problem away from them. Unfortunately in many cases, including Singapore this is far from the truth. The truth is that without the foreigners, Singapore would not have achieved the wealth it has and will unfortunately fail in the future without more foreigners.
Singaporeans should start protesting (which of course you cannot do), and perhaps vote for another government that will get rid of the restrictions, let you breath, innovate and create. Although it will take another 20 years as the current generation cannot.
