MPs to ask questions on Wikileaks, COE prices

The recent Wikileaks reports which attributed remarks to various Singapore leaders and officials will be raised when Parliament sits on Monday.

MP for Hong Kah GRC, Zaqy Mohamad, is asking the Home Affairs Ministry whether there are plans to implement new measures to prevent classified information from falling into unauthorised hands.

Non-constituency MP, Sylvia Lim, also wants to know if the Wikileaks revelations have affected Singapore's bilateral relations with ASEAN neighbours.

Questions on the prices of Certificate of Entitlement (COE) have also been tabled.

MP for Sembawang GRC, Lim Wee Kiak, will be asking if there is evidence of speculation in view of the recent hike in COE prices.

In addition, MP for West Coast GRC, Arthur Fong, will be asking if the higher COEs have an impact on business costs.

Also tabled are questions on the case of a former scholar with Singapore's Education Ministry who was caught owning child pornography while studying in the UK.

MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, Lee Bee Wah, wants to know whether the Education Ministry looks into candidates' conduct, psychological make-up and disciplinary track record in school in the selection of students for government scholarships.

Nominated Member of Parliament Audrey Wong is also asking if the current screening criteria for teaching scholarships will be reviewed.

Several bills will be introduced, including the Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill, where requirements for foreign lawyers to practise Singapore law is expected to be eased.

An Amusement Rides Safety Bill will also be introduced. Taking over from the Singapore Police Force, the Building and Construction Authority will now establish a new regulatory framework to enhance the safety of amusement rides, such as roller coasters.

MPs Josephine Teo and Zainudin Nordin will also table a motion on Inclusive Growth. The motion calls on the government to continue doing more to support low-skilled workers so that all Singaporeans may share the fruits of the country's prosperity.
