SUBANG JAYA: Umno Youth is in the midst of bringing back a mother of six currently held in Milan, Italy, after being used as a drug mule by an international syndicate. The woman, from Taman Bukit Serdang, Seri Kembangan, had been in custody since last year, said the movement's community complaints bureau chairman Datuk Muhammad Khairun Aseh. He added that the woman, in her 40s, was a member of the hardcore poor and a recipient of welfare assistance. She was used as a drug mule by the syndicate with the promise of getting high-quality textile from overseas for her tailoring business,said Muhammad Khairun. In Italy, however, her luggage was stuffed with the contraband and she was detained by the authorities.

"Her husband lodged a report at our bureau and we have contacted the Italian authorities to try bring the woman home," he said yesterday. Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Narcotics Department deputy director Datuk Othman Harun said the number of Malaysians being used as drug mules by international syndicates had fallen last year compared to the previous years. "The trend has changed after close monitoring by police," he told Bernama. He added that the syndicates had also tried to use poor or disabled women, including those with mental illness, but the number was small.
