Ironically, it was due to Supreme Leeder LKY's hamfisted meddling, Sinkie Chinese people's Chinese (Mandarin) language skills have declined in tandem with their dialect skills. Consequently, during CNY family gatherings, older generation talk to younger generation in dialect, it's like chicken trying to talk to duck.

Nothing like this happened to the Chinese folks in Malaysia.

Then this stupid campaign came along and it was referred to as 華語

Now it is 普通話

Come on. PAP was anti Chinese in the 60s. Chinese was a 2nd language taught in school only. Everyone must learn Malay and was 国语.

華语 was taught in Chinese school and trading use only.

普通话 means common language in China for trading use.

China want choose a language among all dialect languages for trading use where everyone in China or overseas Chinese 华侨人 can communicate 交通.

普通 means common...

Then it narrowed to either 汉 or Cantonese top the list.

Han was chosen becos Han has more diversities and many ancient words wrote in Han. But Han has no full octave, only 7 sounds. That's why modern Chinese songs does not sound nice with modern instruments. compare to other languages that had full octave 8 sounds.... Do re mi fa so la ti do.

Cantonese has a nice tone, 1 octave, but lack many diversities and words.

So what China need is to recreate more words for the missing sound.

Like say fuck you in Chinese sounds nice....
