WASHINGTON (AFP) - – Google's Android surged past Apple's iPhone last quarter and is closing in on the Blackberry as the most popular smartphone platform in the United States, market tracking firm comScore said.

According to comScore, 63.2 million Americans owned smartphones at the end of December, up 60 percent from a year earlier.

Blackberry maker Research in Motion was the US smartphone leader at the end of the fourth quarter with 31.6 percent of the market but its share fell from 37.3 percent the previous quarter, comScore said.

Google's Android mobile operating system was next with a 28.7 percent of the smartphone market at the end of December, up from 21.4 percent at the end of September.

Apple was third with 25.0 percent of the market, down from 24.3 percent the previous quarter, according to comScore.

Microsoft software was running on 8.4 percent of the smartphones in the United States, down from 9.9 percent the previous quarter, comScore said, and Palm, which is owned by Hewlett-Packard, saw its market share slip to 3.7 percent from 4.2 percent the previous quarter.

It's a stupid comparison. Android is an operating system used by a long list of smart phone manufacturers.

The iPhone is a piece of hardware which runs on its own proprietary OS. So too is the Blackberry.

I neither use iphone nor Android. But I would use Android one day. Suckers is to 做刺激 more effective.
People paid extra and signed contract for iPhones. Which you can not:

1. Remove memory card
2. Remove battery / change battery
3. No FM

Btw how huge are mem cards nowadays? 32Gb is the largest for iphone have 100GB card for phones?

Internet traffic is not FOC, FM is FOC. Depending on your subscription, you are measured per KB especially when your A/C is over quota.

Removal of memory card regardless of capacity, is an important PRIVACY feature. E.g. I can remove my card and send my phone for repair, I am safe that way my privacy will not be invaded by repair man. I won't become Edison Chan.

iphone is such that you become Edison Chan when your repair man load your cum shots to the web you have no choice, unless you use hammer to smash it and don't want to repair. You can not use USB to x'fer nor delete when your iphone already died.

iphone stuck you to charge itself when it is flat. Any other phone, you can pop in a replacement battery any time, and leave the flat battery at the charger, you are not stuck there to await charging. That is very important, it is your freedom.

You dare leave your phone and walk away when it's memory card can not be removed? You still can become Edison Chan when someone copied it!

One more sick thing about iphone, so hard to remove the SIM card also.

I can remove my memory card and SIM card and lend my phone to others, or pop my memory and SIM card into any phone when my phone is out of order. iphone can not!

When reading this Apple vs Google thing, it's important to understand that Apple is selling all the iPhones they can make. In fact they can't make enough iPhones to meet demand

You just have look in the buses, trains, MacD,...., it seems that everyone has an iPhone

Same thing happened with their iPads & will happen again when the iPad v.2 is released in the next few months

Apple stock is at record levels, hitting US$353+ on monday. Many analysts predict $400+ by this year.
