Jailed: Student Xuanyu Zhong, 25, drugged and sexually assaulted his female victim after becoming obsessed with date rape pornography
The son of a Chinese government official who was obsessed with date rape pornography has been jailed for six years after drugging an unsuspecting girl before sexually assaulting her.Northumbria University student Xuanyu Zhong, 25, spent months researching how to carry out his 'fantasy' before buying drugs off the internet.Newcastle Crown Court heard how Zhong then secretly laced his victim’s drink and forced himself on her while she lay helpless.Zhong, whose dad is a government official in China, had intended to rape the girl but, 'for some reason', changed his mind at the last minute and instead sexually assaulted her.
The student was eventually caught when his victim remembered certain parts of the assault and reported it to the police. Zhong, originally from China but living in Newcastle at the time, claimed the incident was consensual but was found guilty by a jury. He finally admitted what he’d done in a letter to the judge ahead of his sentencing on Friday when he was jailed for six years.Judge Paul Sloan QC said: 'I’m satisfied that for some time prior to these offences, you had fantasised about drugging a female and then sexually assaulting your victim by having intercourse with her while she was incapacitated.
'Your computer was examined and the internet history revealed that, over a period of time, you, and I’m satisfied it was you, viewed web pages identifying and detailing the effect of different date rape drugs.' The court heard that Zhong made searches for drugs on different occasions in August 2011. He also downloaded and viewed eight pornographic videos in November 2011.
Convicted: Zhong denied the charges but was found guilty of sexual assault by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court, pictured. He eventually confessed to the crime in a letter to the judge ahead of being sentenced to six years in prison on Friday
Judge Sloan said: 'The videos showed women apparently being drugged and then, while incapacitated, the videos showed the victims being sexually abused and raped by a number of males.'You accepted when pressed during the course of your evidence that you were sexually excited by such videos.
'You also obtained and experimented with what you believed was two different types of date rape drugs prior to the commission of these offences.
'However, you discovered that the substances you had obtained didn’t in fact work and so you threw those two bottles away shortly before the events of December 9, 2011. 'Those bottles were subsequently recovered and examined and, in fact, probably contained nothing but water. 'You thereafter obtained from the internet, as you now admit though didn’t during trial, the drugs and continued to drug and sexually abuse your victim.'
He added: 'This was a premeditated offence. You offered to get your victim a drink and, when she accepted, you laced that drink with the drugs you obtained. Her recollection of events thereafter is very limited.'
The court also heard that the victim had been subjected to a campaign of threatening texts and phone calls after Zhong’s dad and friends tracked her down and put pressure on her not to give evidence.
Judge Paul Sloan QC said the matter had been reported to the Chinese police.
Paul Cross, defending, said: 'His letter isn’t a complete acceptance but it is a substantial acceptance. It expresses remorse and explains the factors which made it difficult for him to put in a guilty plea at an earlier stage.'
