Six U.S. Navy E-6B “Mercury” aircraft — the planes that act as airborne nuclear command centers and strategic communications relays — are flying over U.S. airspace simultaneously.

The E-6 Mercury aircraft, operated by the US Navy, has been a stalwart presence in the fleet for over 35 years. Initially, the E-6A model entered service in August 1989, before being upgraded to the current E-6B configuration, which has become the standard for the fleet. Although the fleet is aging, service-life extension programs and continuous upgrades have kept the aircraft operational.
