The fox is showing his tail. He knew his proposal would be rebuffed. In fact, he knew with his doctorate IQ that the proposal is a win-win for SDP and a lose-lose for WP. Yet knowing these why did he do it?
This can be explained by the fact that what he has wanted all along was to enter into the contest whatever and he just needed an excuse to do it. What shocked him was his excuse was soundly rejected by the netizen including some of his own supporters. So he did his "vice versa" damage control which he knew that WP would also not accept but this dragged him further down as it wiped out all arguments for the original proposal. The gambit has failed badly.
Sensing that nothing he did was politically correct, he now has to come out to declare that he knew all along that WP would not accept his offer, directly admitting that this is all a big wayang just to create an excuse to enter into the contest, abandoning all pretense of opposition unity and the objective of throwing out the PAP, left only with the selfish stark objective of usurping WP from their lofty pedestal.
In this final installment of this sad episode, CSJ attempts to show that his intelligence is still intact (maybe that is the only thing that can be recovered), that he knew all along what he is doing but cannot escape the fact that he is politically inept and will have the electorate's fury haunting him for the rest of his political life if he endeavors to prolong it, pulling down his partners in arms as well. That is, unless he joins the PAP. Then the 60% will love him but the 40% will want to murder him.
As I have said before, the test of leadership is to do the right thing and assume the leadership at the appropriate time but so far we see nothing of this from any of his comrades which really shows the dearth of leadership in SDP despite the presence of so many doctorates and great orators.
