HONG KONG (AFP) - Former US intelligence technician Edward Snowden is en route from Hong Kong to Moscow heading to a third destination, the South China Morning Post reported.

"US whistleblower Edward Snowden has left Hong Kong on an Aeroflot flight to Moscow, credible sources have confirmed to the South China Morning Post," the newspaper, which has carried exclusive interviews with Snowden in Hong Kong, said in a brief report on its website.

"Moscow will not be his final destination," it said, raising the possibility of Iceland or Ecuador as Snowden's final destination.

China on Sunday attacked the United States as an espionage "villain" after Snowden raised new allegations about the far-reaching extent of US cyber-snooping against Chinese targets.

The official Xinhua news agency noted that Washington was now pressing Hong Kong to extradite the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor after he fetched up in the Chinese territory last month.

But the US government first owes the world an explanation, it said, as a prominent Hong Kong lawmaker noted that the territory has the legal right to resist an extradition request made for political reasons.

Hong Kong does not depend on USA for protection. It belongs to China.

The Yankies forget that in 1997, Hong Kong was returned to China.

The extradiction treaty is from the British past.
