Crime Library posters: SMRT replies

WE REFER to Mr Murali Sharma's letter regarding SMRT's arrangement with Crime Library to put up posters of missing people ('SMRT, it's a shame to pull the plug on Crime Library', Jan 9).

Every week, SMRT receives requests from individuals, and non-governmental and charitable organisations for the use of noticeboard and media space to promote their causes to our commuters.

Each request is evaluated and checks are carried out on the requests and organisations. SMRT supports many of these efforts. However, it is not possible to assist everyone, as our noticeboards must carry other information, such as transport-related schemes, and health and security matters that affect millions of commuters.

The organisations we work with are aware that our support is for a limited period as our spaces are always in demand. Our support for Crime Library with free noticeboard space, from October 2006 to July last year, was one of the longest.

We recognise that SMRT is a part of Singaporeans' lives, hence we are always ready to aid our community. Besides sponsorship of media space in our network to promote various causes, our community efforts also include volunteer programmes in which our staff help out at our adopted charities, and monetary contributions from our company.

Over the years, SMRT has lent support to myriad causes, such as social services, education, the environment and the arts.

We remain committed to making a positive impact on the communities we serve.

He asked if Crime Library can use the space which was previously provided. She replied how the world was created and the role of SMRT in it. Hopefully by next GE, she might have time to answer the question.

I wonder if all the requests to SMRT is as important as posters for missing people. Maybe SIA asked to put a poster for missing plane, SBS, a missing bus and Mah Bow Tan seeking help with a missing HDB block for FT rentals.

She is saying that SMRT done a lot of charity already so cannot do too much.

I wonder if any company would be willing to 'purchase' the space for Crime Library. This would be good publicity for the company.

if one is to read in between the lines, the crime library posters can continue to be posted on the boards ------ for a fee.

She was brought in specifically to build up the retail space in MRT stations and that means shops rentals and advertising space rentals. She has always operated in a monopolistic envionment - Airport Duty Free .
