It was reported 2 days ago that SMRT chief spokesman, Ms Kalai Natarajan, has handed in her resignation and will leaveon Monday. link

Ms Natarajan’s resignation comes on the heels of a major reshuffle where 8 senior management staff joined SMRT after Desmond Kuek Bak Chye had become its CEO.

As if there were no suitably qualified applicants, CEO Kuek Bak Chye had also roped in 3 ex-colleagues from the SAF and RSAF who had no relevant experience working in a private organisation. http://www.smrt.com.sg/AboutSMRT/SeniorManagement.aspx

What is troubling is the various heads from the HR, legal, planning, businesses development, corporate communications, buses and trains have all been replaced in 2013. There is little assurance from SMRT when it employs Tan Kian Hong as VP of buses when he had zero experience after having spent his entire career in the SAF and the education sector. Lee Ling Wee, another ex RSAF personnel, was put in charge of trains despite his irrelevant experience in the management of aircraft and weapons systems. Perhaps the SMRT intends to arm our trains and convert them to aircrafts?

In the latest SMRT incident where a bus had overturned on 22 July, killing one passenger, SMRT selectively disclosed personal details of the driver except his nationality to the Straits Times. However, the driver’s identity was disclosed on Channel 8 news. SMRT PR stunt attempted to downplay the fatality after repeated recent breakdowns with tonnes of irrelevant information. This appears to have backfired as it insults even the intelligence of even 6 year olds.

Ms Natarajan could not have joined SMRT at a worse timing, fronting SMRT’s systemic failures for 5 months. She is no ordinary employee and for her to not ‘give face’ (notice) to SMRT, there must be more than meets the eye.
Her resignation is akin to a cabinet minister quitting Singapore Inc just months into the job.

Although SMRT had removed its heaviest deadweight costing some $1.8 million annually, it has no doubt added more less-costly ones i.e. those with irrelevant experience. The replacement of more than half of the senior management staff also spells trouble for commuters. (imagine half the Singapore Inc cabinet being replaced within months)

To quit after only 5 months into the job (with immediate effect), Ms Natarajan must have had overwhelming doubts of SMRT. This is in line with the negative public perception.

The frequent replacement of senior management are signs of a failing company. SMRT owes the public an explanation.

becos she dunno what to say anymore?

SMRT may have had a few hiccups in recent years but that does not alter the fact that it's a very well run company. Considering the volumes that it carries daily without incident, the company is doing an outstanding job.

Was she responsible for the announcement "If you can not board the train at platform A please wait for the next train" at the stations?

Hey! That sounds good!
You keen on returning to the motherland to work for a well run conglomerate? ;)

No lah, last year arready got this announcement.

I think she got red faced so she needed to go.

Fortunately it’s not the trains, or the buses. It’s minor. Shares are marginally off today, so market doesn’t worry about this latest dyfunctionality

Still even think about investing in it because the continuing dysfunctionality is not reassuring, inspite of having as CEO, a scholar and ex SAF head, who was brought in to get the trains (and buses) to run on time again. Still not running. There have been several train delays, the most publicised of which was in April when a crack on the northbound track between Somerset and Orchard stations slowed trains to a crawl. Then a speeding bus (driven by FT PRC driver training for F1) crashed overturned. There were injuries and a death. And then there was S’pore’s first strike (legal or otherwise) in decades.

All this on the watch of a scholar and general? Err what would have happened on the watch of a non-scholar, sales char bor FT? Actually, we know: overcrowded trains, poor working conditions for FT drivers, contempt for commuters.

Back to the latest failure: SMRT’s Vice President for Corporate Marketing and Communications, Ms Kalai Natarajan, has quit after only 5 months. She was among several senior management staff (mostly ex-SAF officers, but not her) brought in by the new CEO Lt Gen (NS) Desmond Kuek after he took over in Oct last year. She was hired in Feb this year, taking over from Mr Goh Chee Kong, who left last year. Mr Goh is the guy who insinuated, “Better you die, than damage SMRT property.” OK, I exaggerate, but not by much. He was ex-SAFer. (Her quitting shows the gd for the FT, where “T” stands for “Talent”, running Temasek’s public communications. I once blogged that he had turned down the SMRT post.)

During her short tenure, more than five in her communication team of about 10 people resigned.

According to ST, her departure is unusual because she is not required to serve notice. She told ST that she is leaving SMRT today (Monday). She confirmed that she will not be serving notice. Usually the notice period for senior management is three months. Seems she hasn’t another job waiting for her.

A HR expert speculated in ST report that there may be a “cultural misfit” if senior management staff “are not on the same wavelength”. Let’s watch to see if the Hongkie that was brought in to run train operations, quits.

If he does, then commuters should be worried, very worried, that experienced professionals have left, leaving only ex-SAFers, not experienced in running public transport operations or public communications.

She is not use to the salutes and "room" command when CEO Kuek enters the meeting room.

Parting of ways not likely to be an amicable one. Looks like more problems to expect from this sicko organisation. With an ex-general in-charge, can only go in one direction - down south. SMRT needs a professional with related experience to run the entity. SPH did not have the credentials. Current chap same same. When will they ever wake up?

"Der Untergang" is such an awesome movie. Making use of that scene with such lame and boring subtitles is an insult!

I am no management guru. But I recall an ex-boss once told me that in a section, branch, division or department, if 1 in 10 unhappy with boss, that's common. Can't please all. When 2 unhappy staff, still ok to trust the head. Unhappiness and complaints can be vicious, not substantiated, malicious etc. But when 3 in 10 start to take drastic measures like resigning or asking for transfer, management need to seriously look into the matter. 5 in 10? One leaving without securing a job? If the other 4 left also without jobs waiting, gone case for that management. The 'cancer' in that entity needs to be annihilated immediately.

I think she was made to lie about the frequent MRT incidents once too often such that she can't cheat her own conscience anymore. At least she has morals. Contrast to Lim Boon Heng who betrayed his religious beliefs to agree with having casinos for a cushy job as Temasick chairman. He really sold his soul.

Good la let the saf top brass run the mrt to the ground....more excitement ahead. Stay tuned.

Bruno Ganz, the guy who played Hitler, doesn't mind, so why should you?
Your party minds? Ah well, that's not our problem, Cheers

deSAF is taking over SMRT (Singapore Military Rail Transport), perhaps harvard alumni Desmond might built a detention barrack for its staff.
