<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->IT IS time schools played a more aggressive role in managing student smokers if Singapore really wishes to see more mentally alert and physically fit young men and women serving the nation in defence and other physically demanding industries for the general well-being of the country.
It is not uncommon to see young girls and boys in school uniform smoking openly, even near their school.
Schools should conduct regular surprise checks on students for cigarettes, and discipline teachers should go on rounds near their school to catch students who smoke. Repeat offenders should be dealt with more harshly. Spare the rod and we ruin our children's health for sure.
Perhaps the Ministry of Health should also disallow cigarette sales near schools and in convenience stores patronised by teens.

It is a common sight these days, to see students in uniforms smoking. Just the other, I saw a few, crossing the road; at a secondary school, SMOKING. I just wondered to myself, the high tobacco taxes, is not curbing the rise in smoking, nor the restrictions; they are just meant to raise revenues & encourages smuggling.

In the past, the students will hide in remote corners & smoke...nowadays; they just do not care, both males & females, OPENLY SMOKE!!!, in SCHOOL UNIFORMS!!!!

Aiyah... school kids so stress nowadays. Maybe they found out about the "benefits" of nicotine now mah.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine

Nicotine appears to enhance concentration[29] and memory due to the increase of acetylcholine. It also appears to enhance alertness due to the increases of acetylcholine and norepinephrine. Arousal is increased by the increase of norepinephrine. Pain is reduced by the increases of acetylcholine and beta-endorphin. Anxiety is reduced by the increase of beta-endorphin. Nicotine also extends the duration of positive effects of dopamine[30] and increases sensitivity in brain reward systems.[31]

So you see, they learning that nicotine actually helps them to study better. Thats thinking outside the box IMHO. ;)

Maybe can suggest give Nicotine patches and supplements for students taking O/A levels Loh.
