Fandi apologises for insensitive remark made to Sikh reporter

National team coach Fandi Ahmad has apologised for his comments made to a Sikh reporter during a pre-match press conference last week, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said on Thursday (Sep 13). "The FAS regrets that Fandi Ahmad’s comments during the pre-match press conference on Sep 6 for the match between Singapore and Mauritius have upset members of the Sikh community," FAS said in a statement posted on its website.

Both Fandi and FAS have contacted the New Paper reporter Dilenjit Singh and the Sikh Advisory Board to "explain, apologise and clarify" the matter, the association said.

The question posed by the TNP writer Dilenjit Singh was as follows, “You said that in terms of skill and technique, some of our rivals in the region have overtaken us. How would that affect you wanting to play the good football which you are known for."

These were his comments:
“We have not all bad... I can’t condemn anybody because our system is different from others. I can’t say it also, as it is against the Government. You know if I say it loud, you know, you will be seeing your turban would be gone. Seriously bro. I cannot say, I want to tell you. But later private I will tell you. ”

On surface, his remarks sounded insensitive to the reporter's culture. He did apologise about his impromptu response. In Singapore culture, when i greet you "Bro", I don't think I intended to be racist.

But if we dig deeper, the main press did not mention much about the part "it is against the Government. You know if I say it loud, you know, you will be seeing your turban would be gone. Seriously bro. I cannot say, I want to tell you. But later private I will tell you. ”

On surface, we are merely seeking politically-correct response from him to make good on his early remarks. But if we dig deeper, he sounded frustrated. What is it about our country or particularly, Sports Singapore that troubled him? What does common sense tell him or us about our dismay sports scene that he can't reveal openly in the press conference?

Politically-correct or Common-sense?

I always believe that the senior atheletes are the most qualified to head their sports association. Fandi's words reminded me of our local marathoner Soh Rui Yong. It appears that are a lot of issues in our local sports scene lately. Just some recent articles for reference:

Soh Rui Yong says he had no coaching help from Singapore Athletics (SA)

The athletes should not be distracted by politics.

Sports Hub boss admits to mistakes, but promises to set them right

Again, Sports Singapore is headed by several former SAF-officers. Sports Singapore is probably one of the most flagged government organization by Auditor-General Office. Many cases were noted but few were pursued.

Such an irony. Fandi could have been a better Malay President. He is still able to think straight.
Fandi is a true patriot.
