Six scuba diver including a sporean went missing while diving off pulau tioman today.
frankly i've tried taking up scuba diving while holidaying in pulau perhentian in east malaysia
and feel that it is quite a dangerous hobby to pursue, though it was fun i back out halfway through the course.
RIP to the missing divers.

1 or 2 missing is already quite rare....6 missing? Hope they are ok.

Scuba diving in Singapore does not emphasize the importance of a buddy system. All too often is a herd of sheep following the most experienced one, i.e.- the tour guide or instructor. So typically, the weaker ones or those at the back can hardly give any signal if they are in distress.

I've seen a group of 20 new divers dive in at one go and the instructor just blatantly tell them, "follow me can already".

The fuckwit was an ex-navy diver and so took the opportunity show off his ability to swim against the currents and not give two hoots about those that lagged behind.

Sure enough, within 15 mins, you could see divers bobbing up in the water or prematurely reaching positive buoyancy.

ALL had run out of air, which should have lasted them comfortably for 40mins.

Out of 20, 10 were forced to surface from 18m without the recommended pit-stop.

The Skipper of the boat and I took witness statements and got them to sign off on them.

I had that instructor banned from the island and his license busted down to open water + blacklisted as a scuba diving instructor from ALL diving associations.

Always must have min 2 instructor one leading from and one at the back/last to monitor any one lost or had any sign of trouble.

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Search teams were on Sunday looking for six scuba divers who went missing a day earlier off a Malaysian resort island after apparently failing to resurface, a maritime official said.

The group, including a diver from Singapore, one from China and four Malaysians, disappeared after going diving off Tioman island on Malaysia's east coast Saturday, an official with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

Only one person with the group, whose members were aged between 25 and 33 and which included two women, resurfaced after the dive, he said.

Three boats and eight navy divers are involved in the search.

Sidetrack abit.
Can anyone shed some light on who is the more experienced diver?
A top military grade kind of diver or those top professional in marine sector.
Many tell me it's different aspects cannot compare and I see both sides claiming their training and skills are better.
But I believe there is basis for comparison...
I mean if the navy best master diver comes with x amount years of experience versus the top local diving pro with same amount of experience who will come up tops?

SINGAPORE: Six scuba divers including one from Singapore, who went missing off Malaysia's Tioman island, have reportedly been picked up by a passing tugboat.

According to Mr Peter Loo, a manager from the Lunar Shipping, the captain of the tugboat sent the company a report at 10.49am Sunday informing it of the rescue.

Mr Loo sent an email to MediaCorp informing the news desk of the rescue after reading the report on the missing scuba divers on Channel NewsAsia App.

The six - one from Singapore, one from China and four Malaysians - disappeared after going diving off the island on Malaysia's east coast on Saturday, said an official with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

Only one person with the group, whose members were aged between 25 and 33 and which included two women, resurfaced after the dive, he said.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said it has been informed about the missing Singaporean, adding that MFA is in touch with the family of the diver.

The MFA has despatched a consular staff to Tioman to provide all necessary assistance.

Malaysia's east coast islands, famed for their corals and marine life, are a popular dive destination. Accidents are rare.

This one more a case of fail to surface at right spot than fail to surface.

Failing to surface at the right spot is a frequent issue. That is why qualified people are needed. The deaths when it happens is due to they surfacing and no boat to pick them up - abandoned at sea. You can be a fully qualified and excellent diver but surfacing in the wrong location is more or less gone case.

Bro, not a popular thing to do but the right and responsible thing to do. Kudos to you. Many people consider it as recreational sports with little danger.
