SINGAPORE: Minister for Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan said he hoped to see more Singaporeans pursue the hawking profession in the future.

Speaking on the sidelines of the opening of a child care centre on Saturday, Dr Balakrishnan said with more centres opening in the near future, the next step will be to encourage people to view hawking more favourably.

"To make sure that there are enough Singaporeans who want to go into this business ... I have to make sure that we send the message that there will be places available, there will be reasonable rentals," he said.

With the announcement of 10 new hawker centres to be built over the next 10 years, and the removal of minimum bids for stalls in April, rental prices of hawker stalls have dropped.

"All these factors mean that rentals are going to fall, and I'm quite happy for that to happen, because our key objective is to provide good and affordable food for Singaporeans out in the heartlands," Dr Balakrishnan said.

"We're also looking at the proposal that there should be some form of training and opportunities to upgrade skills ... We will even look into proposals like having some form of central purchasing in order to get better prices through bulk purchases."

There are many areas we can work on to uplift our hawking profession, and I think in the years ahead, I want to make it an attractive and honourable profession for Singaporeans to move into, and especially for younger Singaporeans," he added.

that's why they keep upgrading hawker centres and purposely make the old hawkers wait for 9 months for re-opening...............

they know the older folks will retire so new players can come in..................

Worse thing is the FTs take over the hawker stalls or coffee shops when its meant to b for singaporeans only

Hawkers with Degrees

PAP will say if these Sinkie Graduates can become hawkers, then other Graduates can do it too..

With low employment rates these days, two NTU graduates, Joseph Chia and Kenneth Yap, became hawkers. Geraldine Chua and Crystal Chan of the Nanyang Chronicle find out how they manage to cope in these difficult times

While some graduates are still hunting for a livelihood in the sluggish job market, two NTU graduates are busy serving steaming bowls of porridge in a coffee shop.

Good friends Joseph Chia Hsiang Yang, 26, and Kenneth Yap Hong Leong, 25, have recently become the bosses of a Tiong Bahru Porridge stall in Clementi Central. They successfully secured the first franchise from the original Tiong Bahru Porridge, which has been around for 46 years.

The original Tiong Bahru Porridge, located at Tiong Bahru Market, wanted to expand its business when Chia and Yap approached the owners and expressed their interest in becoming its first franchisee.

Said Chia, who graduated from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) last year: "With the poor economic outlook, it is difficult to find jobs. Since we have a passion for entrepreneurship, why not give it a shot while we're still young?"

When asked if they felt becoming a hawker was a waste of their degrees, Chia replied: "Sometimes, I feel it is. But, I tell myself my vision is to be an entrepreneur. We are both interested in doing business, and the degrees are just something to fall back on."

Chia and his partner, Yap, a Nanyang Business School graduate, drew on their personal savings to come up with money for the venture. Said Chia: "Each of us chipped in $4,000. It's almost three-quarters of our savings."

With that, they were ready to take on their new calling.

He added what they have learnt in NTU does come in handy in their porridge business.

The pair were part of the pioneer batch of the Technopreneurship and Innovation Programme's (TIP), a four-month postgraduate diploma.

Chia felt the most important thing he learnt in TIP was passion and motivation, two qualities necessary for entrepreneurship.

"In Singapore, people are generally afraid of taking risks, but the TIP lecturers drove home the point that we must not be afraid of failure, that we can always start all over again."

Both of them also learnt that having their own business involves a lot of hard work.

Their franchiser delivers the porridge to their stall every morning at 6.00 a.m. Customers are assured of eating the same porridge as is sold at the original stall.

The two friends also employ a worker to help out during the peak hours.

"We had to chop chillies and onions for the first time. We also have to do dirty work like washing dishes and cleaning the stall," said Chia.

He added: "We wake up at 5 a.m. and travel to our stall in order to catch the breakfast crowd. And we work nine to ten hours every day."

He also worries about sales and hopes to break even by the end of this year. The stall sells about 170 bowls of porridge per day on average.

The signature dish here is fried intestines porridge, which goes for $5 a bowl. Other varieties such as cuttlefish or century egg porridge go for $3 a bowl.

For now, business has been satisfactory for the young entrepreneurs and they hope to open a few more stalls in the future.

Said Chia: "Presently, we are scouting for locations. It is too early to tell how many outlets we want to open. We will take things as they come."

Nowadays it is a habit for PAP ministers to open their mouths to vomit nonsense just to
justify their multi-million dollar salaries for talking cock .

Rental also not cheap. unless govt lower the rental for singaporeans :D

Dont worry, Sinkies wont even get the chance, priorities will go to foreign trash first. Just like Geylang, now all the China and Viet pimps and gangs kick out all the local lau bengs and replace all the girls with their own from China etc. Likewise as it is now already all the hawker centres and foodcourts are all hiring China workers and very soon, they will be taking over and running all the stalls too. So please dont misunderstand Miss Vivian Pundeksamy hor? she is actually addressing this announcing this piece of good news to all the foreign trash, not locals hor? Sinkies all can tan ku ku hor?
